My name's Sarah and I'm not a cyclist. I'm sorry. I've got a bike but unfortunately for us both the most use she's been put to in the last 12 months is featuring as a model in the above postcard photo shoot.
With Le Tour de France on the horizon and all the bike hype surrounding it, I've been feeling especially guilty and inadequate for my over dependence on my Oyster card and I felt like a dreadful intruder in the bicycle world while I was coming up with the postcard designs above for the Spoke 'cycling illustrated' event that took place at Peckham's Bussey Building last weekend. Who am I to draw (tiny childish) bikes when I'm a little bit too afraid to cycle around London?
To pay the cycling community back for breaking and entering, I have created my very own cycling tour that will take only a mere fraction of the time and is 1000 times less far to go than the Tour de France. You also get to spend most of the time eating, drinking or doing other activities that aren't cycling. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Le Tour de Peckham.
Le Tour de Peckham is broken down into 8 stages and allows you to take in the sights, sounds and cuisine of South London's Peckham. Please see stage map below for reference.
Stage one: Fill your belly - Peckham Rye to Crossroads Cafe
The Crossroads Cafe is a top location for cheap hang over eats and will provide excellent, if greasy, sustenance for the cycle ahead.
Stage two: Get paint in your hair - Bellenden Road to Sonsole's Print Studio
Work out those abs and forget the third slice of fried toast while pulling a few screen prints at Sonsoles. Chadwick Road incline: 1%
Stage three: Put paratha in your mouth - Chadwick Road to Ganapati
Ganapati is effing A. Eat it all.
Stage four: Put culture in your eyes - Lyndhurst Road to the South London Gallery
Take in colours, lines and spaces at the tiny but lovely South London Gallery. Take care cycling up and down the stairs.
Stage five: Heady heights and literature - Peckham Road to Peckham Library
The highest point of le tour is at the top of Peckham Library - cyclist are recommended to take the lift to the top for views over the surrounding area.
Stage six: Cheap as cinema* - Rye Lane to PeckhamPlex
Go and watch Ladri di Biclette or another film that's actually showing for £4.99 at PeckhamPlex.
Stage seven: Gin and dancing/yoga - Under the bridge to CLF Art Cafe
Drink all of the gin and bust some lycra-clad grooves at one of the club nights at the Bussey Building's CLF Art Cafe.
Stage eight: Roll home - Rye Lane to FIN
Congratulations, you've completed Le infamous Tour de Peckham and arrived back at leafy Peckham Rye, have a lie down on the grass but mind all the intimidating crows.
If you feel that Le Tour de Peckham is adequate compensation for my lack of actual cycling prowess, do visit my Etsy shop to get your very own French cycling themed hand screen printed post cards.
